Do you only rescue and place certain breeds of dogs?

There are different breed rescues within the state of Alabama, there are even all breed and mixed breed rescues. My love and the majority of my canine experience has been with the Doberman and that is why I have made my life long commitment to helping homeless Dobe’s. We take pride in not discriminating against an animal because of its age, color, size, shape, cropped or not cropped ears, docked or not docked tail.

How do you decide which Dobe’s to rescue?

More dogs need to be rescued that those for which Alabama Doberman Rescue has the resources to help! We are experienced with evaluating their temperament, and only except the ones that we feel can be placed with a new owner. Those dogs with aggressive dispositions are generally not accepted into rescue. Younger dogs are usually easier to place than older ones. those that have been abused beyond reasonable recovery are not rescued. Dogs with obvious illness or serious medical problems are often not accepted because of the expense involved in nursing them back to health to be placed into new homes. There are also times when We simply just don’t have the space or money to help another dog. Trust us, We always try to take them if there is any way we can do so.

What if I have another dog or cat…?

This is the importance of the adoption application and prescreening. Even though it is time consuming to fill out (and you just have to do it once), it does give us information that is very important in the placement of the dog into the right home. The cute picture on our website will not be what you see, if the personality of the dog doesn’t fit into your family environment. Our Dobe’s are tested with cats and other dogs and we know ahead of time what environments will work with your dog and other animals.

Is there a difference between the female and male dispositions?

Well, it’s really a quality of individual dogs rather that all of one gender or the other. Disposition really is dependant on many things that have little to do with gender. One of the most significant factors is your family and how the dobe or any dog for that matter, fits into it with both humans and other animals.

Why should I adopt a Doberman over other breeds?

  • It’s a matter of your personal taste.
  • The Doberman is a shorthaired dog and no elaborate grooming is needed.
  • They do shed, but the hairs are small and can be overlooked easily.
  • They are generally easy to maintain as far as grooming and care.
  • They don’t slobber or drool as badly as many other breeds.
  • There’s less oil on their fur which helps with odor.
  • They project an image. When a stranger approaches the house, you know it. So does the stranger!
  • They are very people-oriented. They need and want to be with you and don’t like being isolated. They literally become a member of your family.

What is wrong with the rescue Doberman? Do you know their background? Why were they given up?

There’s nothing wrong with rescue Dobe’s. Life often throws unpredictable curves and circumstances that we can’t control. We don’t place them if they have a history of biting or with known health problems. If they are a rescue from a shelter, we try to find out from the shelter why the owners gave them up. We evaluate their temperament and have a vet give them an examination to see if they are in good health before we offer them for adoption. Most people give their Dobe’s up because they do not have the desire or the time to train the dog. Owners that surrender their dogs must supply us with extensive information about the dog’s health and temperament.

Do rescued Doberman need special care?

Yes, they will be making a transition from one home to another and other from more than one foster home. They will need a lot of patience, attention, and a great deal of LOVE to settle into your routine. It does take time to do this but not as much special attention as a young puppy would.

Will an adult dog bond as well as a puppy would?

YES! They are often well aware that they have been specially chosen and are extremely grateful for their new home. They will likely follow their new human parent devotedly and will show great affection for their new family members. He might carry along with them a few habits like sleeping on the sofa or bed, but with love, patience and kindness, these habits can be changed, if you really insist and are consistent.

Why are all the Dobe’s from rescue required to be spayed or neutered?

There are more dogs than homes for them, purebred as well as mixed-breeds. Because Doberman’s are a popular breed, there are many that are homeless. Spaying and neutering helps the overpopulation of dogs.

What is Fostering or Foster care and why is it an important part of a successful rescue?

Foster care is temporary nurturing in a home environment. We don’t like to kennel a Doberman that is in transition from one home to the next. Whenever possible, we try to find a temporary loving home where the Dobe can be cared for, evaluated, and trained while waiting for a permanent placement. Often our previous adopters offer to foster a dog because they have had such a wonderful experience with the dog they have adopted that they want to help other homeless Dobe’s.

Who is eligible to be a foster family?

Foster care is ideal for those who have had experience with Doberman, but perhaps do not wish to commit to a permanent placement. Or, perhaps, a foster family already has a dog, but has the facilities and ability to care for more than one dog for a time. This can be a very rewarding experience.

Once adopted, do you ever take back the dogs that were one in your care?

We make a lifetime commitment to all of our dogs. Should any unforeseen situation arise with the adoption party, and the dog can no longer be cared for properly by the adopting family, we will always accept the dog back into our organization. In fact, our adoption contract includes a “return to rescue” provision in which the adoption party must specifically agree to return the dog to us if for any reason the proper care of the dog becomes impossible.
