How do I Adopt a Doberman from Alabama Doberman Rescue?

The Adoption process at Alabama Doberman Rescue is similar to the adoption process at many other Rescue Organizations.  Right now, it is a Five Step process.   We have attempted to make the process as simple as possible.  In the future, all of the forms required will be filled out on our web site as we complete the on-line versions.  Until then, please bear with us

Step One – Is a Doberman right for you?

If you’ve never had one of these wonderful dogs, please take the time to research the breed to ensure that this new family member will indeed suit your lifestyle. Need help? Please check out the Doberman Pinscher Club of America website and feel free to contact us.

Are you ready for the commitment?

The Doberman Pinscher is not a dog for the wishy-washy or faint of heart; nor is it suitable for a workaholic dog owner. This energetic breed demands a full commitment of time, lobe, resources and training from its owner. In return for this commitment, you’ll receive a fearless, loyal and obedient companion with a heart of gold all wrapped in a gorgeous, shiny, muscular package. Despite its reputation as a vicious watchdog with jaws full of snapping teeth, a real-life Dobe is more likely to be seen lolling on a comfy couch, leaning against its beloved owner with a slightly goofy grin on its face. Not to say that this watchdog is a figment of our imagination. Indeed, the Doberman Pinscher’s urge to guard owner and property is instinctual and can be scary, or downright dangerous, if improperly handled.

You must build on a foundation by training with a reputable dog trainer and socialize your Dobe with firm, consistent and gentle methods. We have provided a few links to training organizations you want to check.  With a Dobe, though you’ll soon discover that the most important commitment you can make is your time and affection.

The Doberman Pinscher cares deeply about its people and want to work together with them. Any event involving the family is celebrated as a joyous occasion. And if that event happens to be a competitive working activity, then the Dobe will be even more ecstatic, grinning and wiggling. Jogging, hiking, shutzhund, agility, therapy work and search and rescue – and most any other canine activity – are all excellent channels for the Dobe’s amazing athleticism, devotion and strong working drive.

If you are willing to make the commitment, you’ll soon have the type of loving, loyal, well-behaved dog that Doberman Pinscher admirers worldwide rave about.

Step Two – Complete our Adoption Application.

This mandatory form is available by clicking the Doberman to the right or contact us and we can mail you one.

This application form and procedure may seem to be a bit much to the average person unfamiliar with the process. We love our Doberman breed! We find it hard to have “just one”. But we know that the Doberman is not the perfect breed for everyone. Because of this, Doberman’s are being turned out of their original homes, for whatever reason, we want their Rescue placement to be a permanent home. To accomplish this, adopting families should think carefully about the future; that’s why we ask so many questions. If there is a question on our application that you do not understand the significance of, or want to know why the question is relevant. please call or email us, we will be happy to answer or listen to your comments.

Step Three – Review the profile of the available dogs .

A current list of available dogs can be found on our website by looking at the Dobergirls and Doberboys pages.  We list every detail that we can about each dog! If you don’t see a dog that appears to be suitable for you and your family, CONTACT US! We will try to search for another rescue Dobe with our other rescue friends and find a dog that will complete your family. We try to list as much information as possible on our website but each day we learn more about our rescue dogs.

Step Four – Meeting the Doberman and home visit.

Upon completion of the application, a reference check, and a telephone and/or in home interview, comes next. If all has gone well, we will contact you to arrange for a suitable time to bring your potential Doberman to you for a home visit to ensure that you, your family and any pets you may already have are all compatible.  This visit is generally a few hours.  It could take longer or it could be shorter, but in general, this is our opportunity for both of us to determine whether either You as the adopter or us as the rescue has any misgivings about the match for the particular Dobe.  This also satisfies our obligation to the Doberman Pinscher Club of America and our promise to place dogs in a safe environment.

Step Five – Completing the Adoption Contract

Once you, your family and Alabama Doberman Rescue feel that a match has been made you will be required to complete an Adoption Contract. We are happy to supply a copy of the contract to you for your review prior to the final decision. If you would like a copy of our contact to review prior to starting this process, you can download a copy or, we will gladly send you a copy via email or regular mail.

What else do I need to know?
Fees– Our standard adoption fee is $275.00 for most of our Doberman rescues. Senior dogs, puppies, special-needs Dobes and mixes may warrant a different fee due to our expenses incurred by us for that particular dog. Your adoption fee helps to defray the costs incurred while the dog is in our care including vaccines, spay/neuter, any necessary medical care and food. The adoption fee is due and payable upon signing of the Adoption Contract.

Continued Contact and Support - Our Dobermans are part of your family and we take their placement very seriously and for life. A follow-up schedule is part of the Adoption Contract. Of course, we want to hear from and ANY time you have questions or concerns! We are happy to support you and your new Doberman!

Anything Else – If we didn’t answer your question here or you’re ready to get started searching for your perfect dog, please check the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) page on our website for additional information.
