Why Adopt?

Well, as rescuers, we could answer that question very simply, spend a day with us!  There are more pets that need Good stable, loving homes than there are available homes for them.

Have you ever visited your local humane society to see the hundreds of pets available for adoption?  We leave crying every time we visit.  Have you ever seen a pet so malnourished that it couldn’t stand on its own?  We have and that’s only one reason We rescue.

So, Why Adopt?  You are the best judge and the best person to answer that question.  What are your plans for the dog?

Dobermans are capable of SO many tasks. They are excellent "working dogs". By working dog, we are referring to a dog that can be trained and certified as a therapy dog, agility dog, search and rescue dog, and shutzhund dog. All of these tasks and More have been and can be performed by rescue dogs especially Doberman's.  Oh, and the AKC will allow a rescue to be registered as a working dog.

If Your reason is for companionship, a family pet, a bed-buddy, a walking partner or jogging partner, a rescue Doberman is more than capable of that.

The only reason that comes to our minds that it would be to your advantage to buy a dog from a breeder, would be if your intentions are to show the dog in conformation shows or breed the dog. If these are your intentions, please go to the Doberman Pinscher Club of America and select a reputable breeder to purchase your dog from and please volunteer with rescue, what better way to establish a working relationship with the Doberman public.

The majority of the dogs we get into rescue are at least a year old, and we are able to test their temperament and we almost always have had experience with them living in the house.

Without a doubt, the reason we hear that most people want a puppy is because they think it is the best choice for a sweet, small child.

You know that cute Kodak commercial with the puppies climbing all over the giggling little boy?  Have you ever noticed how short it is?  That’s because they could only show a few seconds before the welts started to rise, the blood started dripping, and the little boy started screaming!  ALL Puppies have needle sharp teeth that they happily sink into anyone who walks by. They also have sharp nails that scratch when they jump up, and on a small child, those front feet land right around their face. And this is NOT specific to Doberman’s.  ALL puppies chew on almost anything available.  It's part of them growing up!

Puppies leave “presents” that your toddler always seem to find before you do. Puppies wake your children in the middle of the night. And puppies don’t know the difference between their stuffed toy and the special toy that your child MUST have to fall asleep or the $200.00 porcelain doll that Granny gave your daughter for Christmas last year!

If you do get a puppy, with the intention of growing up with your two year old child think about this: in six months, your child will be about one inch taller and 3 pounds heavier, your puppy will then be about as tall as your child and at least 20 pounds heavier. Those baby teeth will have been replaced with big snappers that still need to chew! And ALL, repeat ALL puppies chew!  So you will need to make sure your puppy training includes what is OK for him or her to chew on and what isn't.

Puppies and small children do live together successfully with the proper training, but in our rescue experience, your child will go through far less Neosporin and Band-aids with an older dog that has already been trained and has been tested with children.

Adopting a Doberman from Alabama Doberman Rescue allows an opportunity for a homeless Dobe to have the family he or she deserves, and we will always be there to help make the adoption experience be one that is a wonderful, fulfilling experience.
