This is the Dobermann Pinscher

The Dobermann Pinscher is commonly known and referred to by owners as the "Dobe".  So when we speak of "Dobe's" it's not because we don't know the name, but because we are intimately familar with these dogs and have a deep love for them.

The Dobe originated in Germany in the town of Apolda.  The credit is usually given to the man that our dogs owe the breed name to, namely Louis Dobermann.  It is also known that Phillip Gruenig was substantially involved in refining the Dobe into the dog you see today.

The Dobe was one if not the first dog that was bred as a companion and protector.  The primary traits of the breed originally were Companionship, Giving Alert and Protection of their Master and Family.  These traits have been passed on to the dogs of today.  When properly raised and cared for, our Dobe's are literally members of the family.

The Dobe is NOT a dog that will thrive without the companionship of his or her family.  It is not a dog that can or should be "left outside".  The Dobe does not have the coat that say a Labrador Retriever has that will protect them from extreme temperatures and climatic conditions.

Dobe's range in size from about 60 pounds to around 100 pounds and from about 25 inches tall at the shoulder to around 28 inches at the shoulder.  Dobe's come in 4 accepted colors; Black and rust (or tan), Red and rust, Blue and Fawn (or Isabella).  All Dobe's have very similar markings.  The colors are commonly referred to as Black, Red, Blue and Fawn.  Dobe personalities vary as much as human personalities and that's why Dobe's have been considered "the dog with the human brain".  Dobe's are smart, very trainable for a wide variety of tasks such as Seeing Eye Dogs, Therapy dogs, Search and Rescue, Agility, Obedience and Police work including both Detection of Explosives and Drugs as well as patrol duty.  One particular comment by many people that know Dobe's is "The Dobe needs a Job".  What they mean is, that the Dobe needs to know he has a function that he will be asked to perform.  Whether it's doing a task as mentioned above or some other function.

The Dobe is Not for everyone and many first time Dobe owners soon find out several things:
1.  It is the Dobe's house that you live in.
2.  It's the Dobe's car that you drive him or her around in.
3.  It's the Dobe's bed that he or she shares with you.
4.  It's the Dobe's yard that you play with him or her in.
If you get the idea, then you are already on your way to being a smart Dobe person.  Your Dobe needs to know that you are in charge, not him or her.

We hope this very brief glimpse into some of the Dobe characteristic's is helpful to you when thinking about Adopting a Dobe.;
